THE MENTAL PATHWAY
The first place we must win the victory is in our own minds. . . . If you don’t think your body can be healed, it never will be.
—Joel Osteen, author of Your Best Life Now
The simple truth is, happy people generally don’t get sick. One’s attitude toward oneself is the single most important factor in healing or staying well.
—Bernie Siegel, M.D., author of Love, Medicine and Miracles
Over 2000 years ago, Plato said in Charmides, “This is the great error of our day in the treatment of the human body, the physicians separate the soul from the body.” Things haven’t changed much since then; physicians still ignore the power of the mind and spirit for healing disease.
The power of the mind to heal or make you sick is almost limitless. Your nervous system controls all the other systems in your body. It is the master computer that checks and balances your entire health. Every thought and emotion triggers the release of chemical messengers throughout the body. In other words, there is no such thing as “just a thought.” Every thought has a physical consequence, for better or for worse. That’s powerful!
The Power of Mind Over Matter
One of the greatest mysteries in traditional medicine is the spontaneous remission of chronic diseases. But it is not so mysterious if one is aware of the tremendous power that thoughts and emotions have over physical processes in the body. Emotions are one of the most important factors contributing to all disease—especially cancer. A change in your thinking or belief can actually change how your genes express—same genes, different results. What you think can mean the difference between having cancer and not having cancer. Just as you are what you eat, you are what you think. Just as you can choose what you eat, you can choose what you think. If you are sick, you must change what you eat and what you think.
Even the CDC has stated that 85 percent of all diseases have an emotional component, and this estimate is most likely conservative. Feelings of anger, apathy, gloom, and resentment weaken the immune system and damage health. Positive thoughts of love, compassion, joy, humor, and the like support good physical health. Your mind is the biggest pharmacy on the planet, and it matters a great deal how you use it. Modern research has shown that your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs trigger the brain to produce a large variety of biologically active chemicals. The activities of the mind affect every body function and have a direct effect on how your cells operate.
In the mid-1970s, Hans Selye, M.D., was the first to demonstrate that animals subjected to stress experienced depressed immunity, elevated blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, and stomach ulcers. Since then, thousands of human studies have shown a direct link between mental state and disease, including cancer. Almost everyone lives with stress, but how you handle stress makes a big difference. People react to stress in different ways. Depending on how each chooses to respond, the same stressful event will make one person sick while having no effect on another.
